Fall 2020 School Reopening

Fall 2020 School Reopening

Parents, Staff, and Community,

Over the past few weeks, the Superintendents in conjunction with the Hendricks County Health Department have been meeting to lay out some guiding principles that all Hendricks County School Corporations will follow to safely reopen schools this fall.  I have attached a letter to this message that outlines many of the basic principles agreed upon by all six school district leaders.  A few of those key principles are listed below.

All Hendricks County schools will be starting on their scheduled date. This means NWHSC first student day will be August 5th as scheduled.  We will run on our regular school schedules and will remind everyone of those schedules as we get closer to school starting. Some other points of interest:

  • Require staff and students to have a mask with them at all times. There will be certain situations, including on a bus and some in-school settings, when wearing a mask will be required for both students and staff.
  • Require students and staff to be fever free for 72 hours without the use of fever reducing medication before returning to school.
  • Maximize instructional space and scheduling flexibility.
  • Employ enhanced cleaning procedures with additional hand sanitizer stations.
  • Open playgrounds with separate zones for sanitization purposes.
  • Allow the use of water fountains for bottle or cup refills only.
  • Adjust lunches to maximize available open space and utilize alternate scheduling to adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Identify and separate space in school clinics to treat symptomatic students.
  • Restrict visitors and guests in our school buildings.
  • Discontinue perfect attendance incentives.

In parallel to the work with all of the other school districts, NWHSC has developed a steering committee made up of seven smaller sub committees to develop our local plan to safely open our schools.  These committees are made up of administrators, parents, teachers, health professionals, classified staff, food service staff, transportation staff, athletic directors and other personnel needed to address specific areas of our day to day operations.  Through this work, we are developing a comprehensive plan to safely open school on August 5th (on time).  Over the course of the next few weeks, I will release aspects of our plan as they are reviewed and approved by our local health department.  As you can imagine, this is a very large undertaking and we will remain consistent in our  communication with you. The NWHSC website and communications from our building principals and central office will be your most reliable sources of information as we move through the summer. Attending school and keeping our students safe will be a true partnership between our schools and the families we serve.  I believe, together, we can hold our academic standards high and keep our students safe at school.  More to come in the upcoming weeks!  In the meantime, stay safe and healthy!!
