What to Expect During Your Day in the One Room School
Full Day
Group arrives at Pittsboro Elementary School
Restroom and drink break inside the main building
Teacher rings school bell
Students enter one-room school
Those who wish to do so may put on a muslin shirt (boys) or a pinafore (girls). Fifteen of each are available.
Students find a seat. Girls sit on one side of the room and boys sit on the other.
Students look at their name tags, and familiarize themselves with their name for the day. The names are taken from the 1911 class that attended the one-room school.

Roll Call
Reading Instruction - Class is divided into three groups according to the book in the desk. Teacher will take one group to the front of the room for oral reading or reciting while the other groups are working at their seats on their slates or completing a reading assignment.
Each reading group will get to spend approximately ten minutes with the school master or school marm at the front of he classroom.
Ciphering (Arithmetic)
Restroom break inside main building
Recess - Students will be allowed to play with games and play with equipment from the time period.
Spelling Bee or Elocution contest
Wash hands for lunch with lye soap.
Dip cups of water to have with lunch

Civic groups often come for one or two hours. The regular curriculum is shortened by the school marm/master, and time is left at the end of the session for questions.
